All About Living in La Quinta California

Living in La Quinta California

La Quinta is located in the Coachella Valley which is part of the Colorado Desert in Riverside County California. It sits between the cities of Indian Wells and Indio and is one of nine cities in the Coachella Valley.

La Quinta was incorporated in 1982 and at the time was named after the large La Quinta Resort it had been built around that was established in 1926. The name La Quinta means “the fifth” in Spanish.

The city is almost surrounded on all sides by the Santa Rosa Mountains. It is in the lowest part of the Coachella Valley. The area was once covered in water and you can still see the water lines of where Lake Cahuilla was formed in the mountains today. The Cahuilla Native Americans were the first residents of the area. Some natives still inhabit the area today. La Quinta’s climate was ideal for farming and became a popular farming area.

As travel into this desert area became more accessible residents from the large city of Los Angeles started to vacation in the area. Since then, the population of La Quinta has been booming.
