Coachella Valley real estate

The city of Coachella is one of nine located in the Coachella Valley which is named after the city. Coachella Valley is located in the Colorado Desert in Riverside County just a few hours outside of Los Angeles California. The actual city of Coachella is the easternmost in the valley.

Coachella holds a rich Hispanic history and many of the residents of Coachella speak Spanish. Coachella is recognized as a bilingual city speaking both English and Spanish.

How Coachella Accidently Got Its Name

As the area was developing into a town, it needed a name. Some suggested that the new town be named after one of the founders and be called the town of Rector. J. L. Rector declined this honor but did suggest the name of Conchilla which was the Spanish word for “little shells” because the area was full of little shells.

This name was accepted by those involved in the naming process and the developers formally laid out a townsite in 1901 and sent a prospectus to the printers to announce the opening of the town and help spread the word about the agricultural possibilities of the area. The printers returned the prospectus with the name Coachella instead, misreading the handwritten prospectus. Instead of correcting the issue Mr. Rector and the others accepted the new mistaken name.
