Earlier this month the Rancho Mirage planning commission held a meeting to look over tentative plans for the first stage of building of the Disney themed community Cotino.

Ground Breaking Began Back in April

More Details Revealed About Disney's Cotino Development

The area that will be developed for this new residential community is located within the boundaries of Gerald Ford Drive, Frank Sinatra Drive, Bob Hope Drive, and Monterey Avenue.
Plans were first publicly announced in February of 2022.

At the groundbreaking ceremony the Mayor of Rancho Mirage, Charles Townsend noted the new development as a perfect fit for the town. He also commented that the new community would bring a beneficial economic boost to the area.

The Latest Details on Disney’s Cotino Residential Community

Cotino is the first residential master-planned community from the Storyliving sector of the Disney Company. The employees at Storyliving hope to bring “Disney magic” to the Palm Springs area with this new neighborhood in Rancho Mirage.

The project will be built in section 31 which encompasses about one square mile of undeveloped land in the center of the Coachella Valley. The first specific plan to develop this land was submitted in 2019.

In the early ’90s, the former owners of the land planned to create a 650-acre golf course community with residential, recreational, and commercial mixed-use areas. One of the investors in the property however faced bankruptcy and the plans never came to fruition.

Since then, the land was purchased by a new investor hoping to revive the mixed-use plans for the area and in December of 2019 the land was officially approved for the “specific plan.” The land is currently planned to be developed in phases and in an order of specific land use types.

Storyliving of Disney has announced that the sale of homes will begin at Cotino early next year in 2023 and that they hope for the first residents to move in by 2024. Homes will have a mid-century modern style architecture keeping true to the main residential housing theme of Coachella Valley and the greater Palm Springs area with what has been described as a “forward-looking” feeling. Home lot sizes are planned for a 5,500 square foot to an 18,000 square foot range.

The names of streets in the community have been shared with the public. And they of course come with that Disney sprinkle of Pixie Dust whimsy we have all come to expect. Names include Azure Sea, Brilliance Avenue, Blue Oasis, Radiance Drive, Purple Iris, Sea Holly Road, and Tide Swell Way.

More Than Just Single-Family Homes are in the Works

In addition to private single-family homes in the community, there will be a hotel, entertainment district, shopping, and dining venues. The entire community is planned around a 24-acre man-made lagoon. A 55+ adult living community is also in the works.

Why Did the Disney Company Choose Rancho Mirage as its First Storyliving Development Site?

Walt Disney himself came out to the Coachella Valley often to get away from the rush of everyday life. He called the area his laughing place. He loved to escape here and reignite his imagination.
