Indian Wells California

Indian Wells is one of the nine cities that make up the Coachella Valley in Riverside County California. It is located between the cities of Palm Desert and La Quinta. Indian Wells is probably most recognized as the host of the Indian Wells Masters Tennis tournament or the BNP Paribas Open.

The History of Indian Wells

The first inhabitants of the area were native Americans. Indian Wells was the site of a thriving Indian village some say as early as 1820. When gold was first discovered on the Colorado River William D Bradshaw built a trail from Los Angeles through the desert to gold mines. With the popularity of the gold mines came the Alexander and Company stage line that uses the trail to transport prospectors into the area and Indian Wells was an important stop along the trail.

As time went on the gold mines were abandoned and the area began to develop into date palm ranches. Over time in the 1950s, the first golf course was open in the area at the El Dorado Country Club, and then came the Indian Wells Country Club. In 1957 famous Hollywood actor Desi Arnaz opened the Indian Wells Hotel which came before the Indian Wells Resort Hotel. Many more big names came to the Indian Wells area including President Dwight D Eisenhower who was a frequent visitor and became an El Dorado homeowner.

As more people discovered how great Indian Wells was it was incorporated into a city on July 14, 1967, and has continued to grow with the development of resort hotels, luxury real estate, and golf courses.
